Hebrews 12:15 “Watch out that no root of bitterness springs up to trouble you, defiling many”

Have you ever felt the sting of bitterness? That feeling of anger, resentment and disappointment from being treated unfairly can fester inside of us, like a root slowly spreading its way through a garden. The Bible warns us to watch out for these roots of bitterness, because if left unchecked, they can defile many.

It might start as just a small attitude, a little thing that nags at us, but the scriptures warn us that “the little foxes spoil the vine”. It doesn’t take long for bitterness to grow into big trouble. The only way to overcome bitterness is by humbling ourselves and taking on the character and nature of Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Bitterness spreads and defiles many through what the Bible calls “corrupt talk”. The Bible tells us to “let no corrupting talk come out of our mouths, but only such as is good for building up and giving grace to those who hear.” (Eph 4:29)

Beware of those who spread bitterness, offense, gossip, and slander – especially against your spiritual leaders! They are helping demons do their job of division and strife when they do this! Do not allow yourself to be defiled by them. Their words can pile up until they have a case against even the most respected leaders.

Don’t let bitterness defile you. Don’t partake in someone else’s sin by sharing and agreeing with their offenses. If you see someone caught up in bitterness, saying things they shouldn’t about their church or leaders, speak to them in love and warn them to repent. If they listen, great! If they don’t, the Bible warns us to stay away from these types of people even if they call themselves Christian (Titus 3:10).

Let’s strive to keep our hearts and our words pure, so that we can build each other up and glorify God! Don’t be bitter, be better!
    Blessings!

    1. ABSALOM – UNRESOLVED OFFENSE TOWARD LEADERSHIP

Absalom, King Davids son, betrayed his father by stealing the hearts of men in Israel and leading them to revolt against their king. This spirit of betrayal works through discontented or offended spiritual leaders who betray the authority of the senior pastor. They seek to build a following of people who will support their agenda, which is contrary to the purpose and vision of the senior pastor and majority of the congregation. This “Absalom” spirit will often lead his followers outside of the church, causing division and great hurt to God’s anointed leadership. These people may also slip into a church’s ranks, carrying offense from their previous church (that they probably were kicked out of or forced to leave). Remember this: An Absolom is faithful, but not loyal.

2 Sam 15:5 And Absolom would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land, then everyone with a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.” Also, when anyone approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him. Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for justice. In this way he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Beware the kisses and the embrace of an Absolom! They will often accuse of their leaders of lacking the love and empathy needed to lead. They may join your cause, but in reality it’s to get you on theirs. They have a “I’ll scratch your back, now you are obligated to scratch mine” mentality. Their gifts, kisses and kindness is a motivated by a character flaw that causes them manipulate those around them to achieve their goals. It is important to understand for those seeking a church that “has love”, you may be walking right into the arms of an Absolom spirit.

All Authority is delegated by God. The Bible teaches submission to authority, and tells us in 1 Peter to wrap ourselves in the garb of a servant and yield to our spiritual leaders. We should not seek to build our own following, or take authority that doesn’t belong to us nor should we step into a position not given to us by God to avoid yielding to this deadly spirit.

    1. A SPIRIT OF JEZEBEL – CONTROL

This spirit has no gender; it can function in both a male or female personality. It especially energizes people who are insecure, vain, jealous and dominating, having a consuming desire to control. Control is this principalities ultimate goal, and will even use sexual passion as a tool. In the church, this spirit may appear to be extremely loyal, and willing to volunteer for special service. It is strong-willed, religious and often very gifted. But make no mistake, this spirit is always motivated by a character flaw that desires to control.

The first time we see Jezebel in scripture, we see a manipulative and rebellious person who sought to destroy the Lords prophets. This spirit hates repentance and the moving of the Holy Spirit, as it will be exposed for what it is!

    1. RELIGIOUS SPIRIT – RELIGIOUS HOSTILITY THAT KILLS

This is a spirit filled with deadly hostility. This pharisaical (religious) spirit killed Abel, crucified Jesus, stoned Stephen and tried to do away with Paul. Its target is still the life of Christ, and it will try to destroy the Christ-life that dwells within believers today. By nature the pharisaical spirit hates the grace of God but loves legalism. The Pharisees rejected Jesus as He preached the good news of the Gospel to the poor. Though He was the chief cornerstone on which God was building His kingdom, they rejected Him for their own interpretation of the Old Testament and for their religious traditions. Through these traditions, while receiving the praise of men they could manipulate and control the lives of people for their own benefit.

When they tried to judge Jesus according to their traditions, He challenged the legalism they held so dear. Upholding their laws was more important to them than building a relationship with the Living Word.

    1. THEY WITHHOLD WHAT THEY SHOULD FULLY GIVE

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Prov 11:24

In the book of Acts, Ananias and Sapphira held back part of the land price. They said it was the full amount, but in thinking they were lying to man they were actually lying to God. Why? Because when we give into the ministry, we’re giving to God not man. Their ‘giving’ actually killed them.

In Malachi, the offerings angered God because they were giving blind and lame animals to God.

Malachi 1:8, When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts.

    2. THEY TRY TO FIND “WORTHY PEOPLE” TO BLESS

Matthew 10:8, Jesus said “Freely you’ve received, freely give,”

We can’t try to work out who/what “needs to be blessed”. In fact, much giving that’s done in the church is just needs based giving. You have to break yourself of the mentality that you only give when there’s a need. Are you giving to God, or are you giving to a need? When you’re only giving when there’s a need, you’re only giving when you ‘need’ to give. You should give freely. You should bless the rich, you should bless the poor, you should bless your enemies, you should bless the brethren; you should just be a BLESSING no matter who it is! God’s rain falls on every person. The Bible says Abraham was “very rich” (Gen 13:2), but God told Abraham in Gen 12, “I’ll bless those who bless you”. Boy, if I knew that and lived during the time of Abraham, I would find a way to bless that man, even though he didn’t need anything because he was already rich!! Why? Because in blessing him, God said I’d be blessed!

Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it. 1 Peter 3:9

    3. THEY GIVE WITH STRINGS ATTACHED / TRY TO CONTROL WHAT THEIR GIVING DOES

Some people give, and expect you to owe them something. Sadly, this is something that local churches experience far too often. This is not giving, this is manipulation. A Believer should never try to control people or organizations with their “generosity”. Others give because they enjoy the recognition and praise of man. If you give with that attitude, that’s the only reward you’re going to get! Why sell out true riches that can be obtained with a pure heart for the praises and recognition of man? Who cares if man recognizes your gift if God thinks it’s pathetic?

Giving to control where it goes and what it does also isn’t true giving. “I’ll give this, if you use it on xyz.” Or “I’ll give if you do make these changes/do this” There is nothing wrong with blessing people towards something specific, but not when you’re deliberately trying to control.

    4. THEY HAVE MORE FAITH IN THE WORLDS SYSTEM THAN IN GODS

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

For some, though they give, they’ve not yet broke free of a poverty mindset and fear, and deep down believe God is not going to honor His word about the blessing. Your mouth is a revealer of what’s in your heart, if you’re a giver and yet still say things like “I don’t know how we’re going to make it.”, “It’s so hard serving God”, “I can never afford that.” You are revealing what you truly believe in your heart. Never call cursed what God says is blessed! Never call God a liar!

Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous. Prov 13:21

    5. THEY ARE MORE FOCUSED ON THEIR OWN BLESSED RATHER THAN OTHER PEOPLES BLESSING

There is more than enough blessing for everyone. God doesn’t want you worried about your own blessing. Seek first the kingdom of God, be a blessing to others, your harvest is on its way!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Gal 6:9

    For God So Loved…

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

I have some Good News for you today! Whether you realize it or not, God has done something absolutely wonderful for you, and has a gift for you to receive. Who wouldn’t want what their Creator has for them? What is this Good News? We call it the Gospel. Did you know that “Gospel” means “Good News”?

This is it: God, our Father, so loved the world that He gave His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. If you never think anyone does anything for you, remember that your Heavenly Father gave you something, His Son! The BEST thing He could possibly give to you! You know, it’s a misconception that God is in heaven full of anger and wrath at people. He actually loves people, in fact, He loves you very much!

Romans 5:8 says “God shows His love for us in this, while we were yet sinners Christ died for you”. Think about that. While you were at your absolute worst, God gave you His best. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is!

2 Cor 5:21 says that God made Jesus to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God. That scripture means that the punishment we were to receive for our sin and disobedience, Jesus took upon Himself. The wrath God would have poured out on us, He poured out upon Jesus on the cross.

Romans 2:4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?

God’s goodness is intended to lead us to repent. Repent means we turn from sin and turn to God. In other words, I don’t want to do the thing that put Jesus on the cross. God’s been too good to me for me to even want to live in that sort of way any longer.

Whatever we lay down, and give up for the Gospel, God sees to it that we get something so much better. The Bible says in 1 Tim 4:8 that living a Godly Life is profitable unto ALL THINGS “promising benefits in this life and in the life to come”. In fact, Jesus said in John 10:10 “I have come that you may have an abundant life”. Think about that, God has a life of abundance and blessing that He wants you to live!

Romans 6:23;10:13 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Are you ready to receive the gift He has for you? Say this simple prayer out loud and mean it in your heart: “Dear Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Forgive me of my sin. Wash and cleanse me. Set me free. I confess with my mouth, Jesus is Lord. I turn my back on sin, and I follow You Lord Jesus! I believe You have died on the cross; I believe you’ve risen from the dead, and I believe you’re coming back again for me. I receive forgiveness, I am saved, I’m born again, I have Jesus in my heart. AMEN!

    The Law of Love

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Jesus replaced the entirety of the Old Covenant Laws with the “Law of Love”. It’s the Law that as Believers we follow above all else. Romans 5:5 tells us that the love of God has been shed abroad in our heart. One translation says “God’s love was poured into your hearts by the Holy Spirit”. The day you get saved, God’s love is put inside of you. This is important to know, because it means we do have the ability to love every person, especially other believers.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

You can never honestly say “I just can’t love that person” Because God has given you the ability to do so. You have to make the decision to yield to His Love. Notice, John 13:35 says “IF you love one another.” IF! Love is a verb, it’s something you choose to do.

God’s love is not carnal or fleshly. In fact, you may need to forget everything you think you know about love to even begin to understand the supernatural force that is the Love of God.

Did you know that there are 4 Kinds of Love in the Bible? Our translations just say “Love”, but there are four different Greek Words in the original language. The first is Eros, which is Romantic Love, then Storge which is Family Love, Philia is friendship love, then Agape which is God’s Love! Agape is what was poured into our hearts when we go saved! John 13:15 …”By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love (AGAPE) one another.”

Is it really THAT important to walk in love? Yes. First, understand that God IS Love (1 John 4:16). The Bible commands us to walk in love (Eph 5:2). When we walk in Love, we walk in God. Faith works by love (Gal 5:6) If you’re not walking in love, you are not walking in faith and your faith will not work.. Love never fails (1 Cor 13:8). When you walk in love, you won’t fail! Everything we do as Believer’s should be motivated by love.

What does God’s love look like? 1 Cor 13:4-7 Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.  It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. 6 It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. 7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].

The definition of “Discouraged” is: “Having lost confidence or hope; dejected; disheartened.” and “lacking in resolution”. Having resolution means to be determined and unwavering!

It’s important to always remember that the devil is a hope thief! Jesus said that the devil only comes to STEAL, kill and to destroy. He wants to steal your hope, your joy and peace, kill your destiny and if he can, destroy you. But praise God, we’ve been given authority and power over the enemy. It’s not scriptural to ever fear the devil, but it’s scriptural to be aware of him.

2 Cor 2:11 says, “…in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” 1 Peter 5:8 also says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”

Be aware, be sober-minded and be vigilant of the plans and schemes of the enemy, but never fear him. When you are aware that the enemy is attacking your hope, and trying to bring you in discouragement, you can begin to take steps according to the Word of God to bring yourself through it!

Psalm 43:5, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”

Part of getting out of discouragement is making the decision that “I WILL put my hope in God! I WILL praise Him again!” It’s a decision you make, to choose to hope in God! It’s very important that the moment you find yourself discouraged, you don’t waller around in it and fall into the sin of feeling sorry for yourself. When all of the people were against David and even spoke of stoning him, he became greatly distressed. But the Bible said he encouraged himself in the Lord.

1 Sam 30:6 “Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him…But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”

Psalm 27:13, “Yet I am confident I will see the LORD’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living.”

You WILL see the Lords goodness! You WILL see what He has promised you! Don’t let the devil steal your hope!

The Bible says in James 1:21-25, “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not MERELY LISTEN to the word, and so deceive yourselves. DO WHAT IS SAYS. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it–not forgetting what they have heard, but DOING IT—they will be blessed in what they do.”

The Bible is not something for us to just read and think to ourselves, ‘Wow, how nice’ or ‘What a great scripture.’ the Bible says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God (he’s talking to YOU Christian!) may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

To do what the Bible tells us to, we must first read it. And we must read it humbly, allowing the Holy Spirit to change our minds, thoughts, opinions & even our feelings. One area that is often tested in the Believer’s life is that of forgiveness.

Here are some scriptures to meditate on on forgiveness!

    1.) It’s a Christian’s glory to forgive
Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11

2.) If you forgive others God will forgive you
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15

3.) Unforgiveness can hinder our prayers
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:24-25

4.) We must love & forgive to be able to love God
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 John 4:20-21

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
    – 1 Corinthians 12:8-11
There are 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
    1. Word of Wisdom
    2. Word of Knowledge
    3. Gift of Faith
    4. Gifts of Healing
    5. Working of Miracles
    6. Prophecy
    7. Discerning of spirits
    8. Divers Tongues
    9. Interpretation of Tongues
These 9 Gifts can be split into 3 different categories…

Power Gifts – Gifts that DO something!

    1. Gift of Faith
    2. Gifts of Healing
    3. Working of Miracles

Revelation Gifts – Gifts that REVEAL something!
    1. Word of Wisdom
    2. Word of Knowledge
    3. Discerning of spirits

Utterance Gifts – Gifts that SAY something!

    1. Prophecy
God has things He wants to say to His people, and He will do this through the Gift of Prophecy! To understand the other two Utterance Gifts we must first understand the Gift of Prophecy. Prophecy is not the gift to be able to foretell future events. Prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known tongue. The purpose of Prophecy is for the exhortation, edification and comfort of the Church (1 Cor 14:1-5). The Hebrew word translated “to prophecy” means “to flow forth. To bubble forth like a fountain,, to tumble forth, to spring forth.” The Greek word translated “to prophecy” means “to speak for another”, it means to speak for God, or to be His spokesman. Have you ever been speaking with a person, and suddenly Scripture and encouragement began flowing out of your mouth? Maybe later you thought “Oh my, I don’t know where that came from!” You could have been actually operating in the Gift of Prophecy. God was speaking through you! This is something you cannot make happen, however if your faith is active and you’re available you can certainly expect God to use you in this way!

    2. Divers Tongues
The next two Gifts work together. Divers Tongues is a supernatural utterance in an unknown tongue. Divers Tongues is God speaking through a person in a heavenly language, followed by an interpretation of what was said. This is not to say a person’s prayer in tongues needs to be or should be interpreted, however if a person were you stand up and publically speak in Tongues to a congregation an interpretation should be expected to follow.

    3. Interpretation of Tongues
Divers Tongues and the Interpretation of Tongues is the equivalent to the Gift of Prophecy. In 1 Cor 14:5 Paul said, “Greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret.” Remember that it is an interpretation of tongues, not a translation. Some people wonder why the interpretation of what was said is longer or shorter than the length of the Tongue that was given. This is because it is an Interpretation of Tongues, not a direct Translation.
