The Pricelessness of Mentors, Correction & Good Friends

1. Discern Those Who God Sends To Mentor You

Deuteronomy 34:9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

There are many reasons God uses a mentor to help you. It provides accountability, helps set a standard, and gives a godly example to follow. Having a mentor allows you to gain experience and wisdom you wouldn’t have otherwise received. It also refines and prepares you for what God has planned for your future.

Impartation also flows out of mentors who have the Anointing. Remember was Saul was with the prophets, he could also prophecy (1 Sam 10:6)! Moses laid hands on Joshua and he received an impartation of wisdom. There are certain graces you can only walk in by your associations, mentors and being under an anointed covering.

Mentorship is found all throughout scripture: Jethro mentored Moses in leadership (Exodus 18:17-24), Joshua was mentored by Moses, Elisha was under Elijah, Samuel was under Eli, Saul was under Samuel, Timothy was under Paul. Ruth was guided by Naomi, Solomon was mentored by his father King David, Jesus mentored many people, the 12 disciples being the closest to Him.

When a person is proud and believes they know everything or can figure it all out on their own, they make a grave mistake. God wants to use mentors to launch and accelerate you. Giants launch giants!

2. Learn the Value of Being Corrected

Proverbs 12:1 (NLT) “To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction.”

Psalm 141:5-6 (TPT) “When one of your godly ones corrects me or one of your faithful ones rebukes me, I will accept it like an honor I cannot refuse. It will be as healing medicine that I swallow without an offended heart. Even if they are mistaken, I will continue to pray.”

There are many reasons people have a hard time receiving correction. Sometimes it’s ego and pride, and it can be hard to acknowledge a mistake or shortcoming, or to receive correction from someone they feel is beneath them. Those with a fear of failure can see correction or criticism as a sign of failure and get upset or hurt. People with insecurity might take correction as confirmation to their thoughts of self-doubt, this can cause someone to respond defensively. Sometimes those who were abused under toxic leadership can also be resistant to correction because their guard is up.

These are all matters of the heart that we must allow the Fire of God to burn out of us if we are going to fully receive the value of correction. Sometimes we just have to learn how to receive correction!

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king” 1 Samuel 15:23

When we are corrected we shouldn’t make excuses or point fingers, instead we should see it as an opportunity to improve and grow. Even if we feel like the correction was given unfairly, it’s best to remain silent and respond delicately until it’s prayed about (1 Peter 2:19-23/Isaiah 53:7/James 1:19/Ecc 3:7). Many times God allows us to be corrected just to test our reaction to it.

Hebrews 12:7 Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?… vs 11… No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”

3. Walk With The Wise

Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

You can perceive a lot about a person by looking at who they are close friends with. Like spirits attract. We can’t choose our family, but we can choose our friends and associations. Find people who bring out the best in you, not the flesh in you!

There is enormous value in surrounding yourself with people as dedicated to growing in the things of God as much as you are! When you associate with the wise, you’ll also become wise! A good friend can catapult you further into your destiny and be a massive blessing to you and your family.
