Keeping God First

“Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes! This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! Now go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild my house. Then I will take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord. You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses. It’s because of you that the heavens withhold the dew and the earth produces no crops. I have called for a drought on your fields and hills—a drought to wither the grain and grapes and olive trees and all your other crops, a drought to starve you and your livestock and to ruin everything you have worked so hard to get.” – Haggai 1:4-11

Sometimes we should check our hearts and ask ourselves, is our life’s goal to build and advance the Kingdom of God? Or to live a comfortable life here and now? God certainly wants us to have a nice home, and nice things. The Bible says that God gives us all things to richly enjoy. God’s Word also says that those who trust Him lack no good thing. And how can we forget the verse that says “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

However, God does not want us to love things, or to strive after things. He wants to bless us out of our seeking first His Kingdom and His Righteousness. To seek His Kingdom means to seek His heart, and to seek His righteousness means to seek His way of doing and being right.

Our number one aim in this life should be to please Him, and should be to advance His Kingdom. We should be praying about, and looking for ways we can see God’s Word go forth more into our city. We should be looking for opportunities to help and encourage those who have dedicated their life in full time praying and preaching the Word of God.

God said in Malachi bring in your tithes and offerings into the storehouse so that there may be meat in mine house. In our tithing and giving into the Gospel, we are connecting ourselves up with God’s great plan to bless and water His people, so that then through them He can bless and water others. In our giving, we should be a flowing river, not a Dead Sea where the water stops flowing! When you honor God, He will honor you. When you build His house, He will build yours.
