Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues… they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
We have been talking about becoming spiritually stronger. Last week we talked about confessing the Word of God over ourselves. Today let’s talk about the importance of speaking in tongues, how it makes us stronger spiritually and the effects it has in our lives!
1. Supernatural Communication
1 Cor 14:2, “For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].”
Romans 8:26-27 tells us that the Holy Spirit will pray through us the perfect will of God. Our prayer language (tongues) is the Holy Spirit praying through us. It is a way we can supernaturally communicate with the Father and pray out the perfect prayer over our lives, our family, city, church, ministries and nation.
We don’t know what we’re praying, but the Father does. Also, the devil has no idea what you’re praying about! Sometimes, God will show you what you’re praying about, but that is not always nessicary. Sometimes, if we knew what we were praying about, we would interfere with it!
2. Refreshing and Rest
Isaiah 28:11-12 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
Isaiah prophecied about tongues way back in the Old Covenant. Under the Old, speaking with tongues was not available because the Holy Spirit lived in a tabernacle and not in the hearts of men. Today, we are the temple in which He resides! Isaiah prophecied that THIS is the rest and THIS is the refreshing! Praying with tongues gives you rest and refreshes you spiritually. In fact, I have met ministers who have said that they noticed when they prayed more in tongues than in English, they would have a supernatural energy and drive to keep going and going, and never felt tired, exhausted or spiritually dead! They kept their spirit-man energized by praying in the Spirit. Jude 20 says when we pray in the Spirit, we build ourselves up in our faith!
3. Yielding to the Spirit
When we pray in other tongues, we are yielding ourselves over to the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues causes us to become more sensitive to the leadings and promptings of the Spirit. You’ll find as you spend time, even hours, praying in tongues, you’ll be much more sensitive to when the Holy Spirit is speaking to you!
